CGPA at University of the Punjab, Lahore is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. Punjab University awards those grade points through the official Punjab University grading scale shown below, a 10-band table that runs from 4.00 (A, 85% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded from 50%.

Section 11 is transcribed verbatim into gradingPlan: 85 and above A 4.00, 80-84 A- 3.70, 75-79 B+ 3.30, 70-74 B 3.00, 65-69 B- 2.70, 61-64 C+ 2.30, 58-60 C 2.00, 55-57 C- 1.70, 50-54 D 1.00, below 50 or absent F 0.00. Two material departures from the HEC pattern: PU prints one-decimal grade points (3.70 / 3.30 / 2.70 / 2.30 / 1.70) rather than thirds, and PU has NO D+ grade, so 50-54 goes straight from C- to D. Section 11(5) rounds any fraction of a mark UP to the next whole mark - the document's own example is that 64.1 or 64.9 must both be shown as 65 - which is unusually generous and can lift a student a whole band. Section 11(1) forbids letter grades for GPA/CGPA themselves; 11(3) caps GPA at 4.00; 11(4) requires CGPA 2.00 for an Associate or Bachelor's degree; section 12 requires re-registration in F and D courses in the next Spring/Fall semester with juniors; the promotion table sets 1.50 GPA in the first semester and 1.70 CGPA thereafter as the automatic-drop line with probation between that and 2.00. The document also defines obtained percent marks (OPM) as the credit-hour weighted average of marks, which is why a PU result card shows both a CGPA and a real percentage.

These factors apply to admissions merit only and are NOT a CGPA-to-percentage formula.

How grading works at Punjab University

Punjab University builds a semester GPA by weighting every course's grade point with its credit hours, totalling those weighted grade points and dividing by the credit hours you carried that term; the CGPA is the same weighted average computed directly from every individual course, not by averaging the semester GPAs. The regulations are explicit on that last point, because averaging term GPAs gives a different answer whenever credit loads differ. Grade points come from a ten-letter absolute table: 85 and above is an A worth 4.00, then A- 3.70, B+ 3.30, B 3.00, B- 2.70, C+ 2.30, C 2.00, C- 1.70 and D 1.00, with anything below 50 or an absence recorded as F.

Two quirks of PU's oldest-university-in-Pakistan rulebook matter to students. There is no D+ grade at all, so the ladder drops from C- at 55-57 straight to D at 50-54. And any fraction of a mark is counted as a full mark: the regulations state that 64.1 and 64.9 must both be shown as 65, which quietly lifts many borderline students a whole band. Alongside the CGPA, a PU result shows obtained percent marks, a credit-weighted average of actual marks. BS Computer Science, BBA (Hons.), BS Software Engineering and Pharm.D on the Lahore campuses all sit on this scale.

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Punjab University grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Punjab University grading table. 93 out of 100 is 93%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.30 = 13.20, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.30 = 6.90, 2 × 2.00 = 4.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 45.10 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 45.10 ÷ 15 = 3.00, the semester GPA for this term at Punjab University.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 45.10) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.15.

The division actually gives 3.0067; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 3.00. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Punjab University programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Punjab University’s degree programmes, including BS Computer Science, BS Software Engineering, BBA (Hons.), Pharm.D and B.Sc (Engg.) Electrical Engineering. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Punjab University CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does Punjab University have a D+ grade?

No. The Section 11 grading table runs A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and D, then F. There is no D+ band, so the scale steps from C- at 55-57 marks directly to D at 50-54. That is one reason a generic Pakistani grade calculator will misreport a PU result for marks in the low fifties.

How does Punjab University round fractional marks?

Upward, always. The regulations state that a fraction of a mark in a course is to be counted as one mark, giving the example that 64.1 or 64.9 must each be shown as 65. Because 65 is the bottom of the B- band, a student sitting on 64.1 gains a full letter and 0.4 of a grade point from the rounding rule alone.

What CGPA do I need for a Punjab University degree?

For the award of a two-year Associate Degree or a four-year Bachelor's degree the minimum required CGPA is 2.00, and it must be held in the last semester. Below 2.00 but at or above 1.70 puts you on probation; below 1.70 from the second semester onward, or below 1.50 in the first semester, drops you from the rolls automatically.

What is the difference between CGPA and obtained percent marks on a PU result?

The CGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points, capped at 4.00. Obtained percent marks, printed alongside it, is the credit-weighted average of the actual marks you scored across all courses, so it is a genuine percentage rather than a conversion. Quote the printed percentage on forms rather than converting your CGPA yourself.

Do I have to repeat a D grade at Punjab University?

You must re-register for every F course in the next Spring or Fall semester with the junior batch. Repeating a D is mandatory only if your CGPA is below the minimum requirement; otherwise it is optional and taken for improvement. Both F and D re-registrations run alongside your normal semester load subject to the usual conditions.

How is a course marked at Punjab University before the grade is assigned?

The regulations work from a weighted total: the document's illustration uses a mid-term worth 25%, an assignment component worth 15% and a final examination worth 60%. The weighted score is rounded to a whole number and then read off the Section 11 table, so a total of 71.4 becomes 72 and is graded B with 3.00 grade points.
