University of Central Punjab CGPA Calculator

Lahore, Punjab · private · est. 1999

At University of Central Punjab, your CGPA is the credit-hour weighted average of every course you have taken: multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add those quality points across all your semesters, then divide by the total credit hours. Grade points come from the official UCP grading scale shown below, on which 86% or more earns A (4.00 points) and the maximum CGPA is 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded from 50%.

University of Central Punjab grading scale

UCP grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 11 bands. A mark of 86% or above earns A (4.00), and 50% is the lowest passing band (D). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

These bands sit ONE MARK ABOVE the common HEC pattern at almost every step (HEC A- is 80-84, UCP A- is 82-85), which is why third-party UCP calculators that reuse the HEC table produce the wrong letter near a boundary. W, I, N, S, US and P/F carry no defined grade points and do not contribute to GPA or CGPA. The same page states that UCP in general follows the relative grading system, that CGPA is computed by multiplying each course's credit hours by its grade points and dividing by total credit hours enrolled, that undergraduates must maintain 2.00/4.00 and Master's students 2.50/4.00, that PhD scholars must hold 3.00/4.00, that 75% attendance is required or a W is awarded, that undergraduates may improve a maximum of 6 courses (3 at graduate level) excluding those replacing an F with the better grade counted, and that a retake examination is graded on an absolute scale without any normalisation factor.

How grading works at UCP

UCP computes your CGPA by multiplying each course's credit hours by the grade points attached to the letter you earned, adding those products across every course you have enrolled in, and dividing by the total credit hours. Grades marked I and W are left out of the calculation entirely. The scale runs to 4.00, and the Johar Town university's published table is a mark stricter than the HEC pattern at nearly every step: A starts at 86%, A- covers 82-85%, B+ 78-81%, B 74-77%, B- 70-73%, C+ 66-69%, C 62-65%, C- 58-61%, D+ 54-57%, D 50-53% and anything below 50% is an F.

That one-mark shift matters more than it sounds. A student on 85% is an A- at UCP but a clean A almost anywhere else, so calculators that borrow the generic Pakistani table will mis-grade you at every boundary. UCP also states that it generally follows relative grading, distributing final grades around the class average, with the exception of approved retake examinations, which are graded on the absolute table with no normalisation factor. The same scale runs across BS Computer Science, BS Software Engineering, BS Data Sciences, BBA and the Pharm-D programme, and 75% attendance in each course and lab is a precondition for sitting the final.

Worked example: a full semester on the UCP scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the UCP grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the UCP grading table. 93 out of 100 is 93%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.33 = 13.32, 3 × 2.67 = 8.01, 3 × 2.33 = 6.99, 2 × 1.67 = 3.34.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 43.66 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 43.66 ÷ 15 = 2.91, the semester GPA for this term at UCP.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 43.66) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.13.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which UCP programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across UCP’s degree programmes, including BS Computer Science, BS Software Engineering, BS Data Sciences, BBA and Pharm-D. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

UCP CGPA: frequently asked questions

Is the UCP grading scale the same as the HEC scale?

No, and the difference is easy to miss. UCP's published table sets A at 86-100%, A- at 82-85%, B+ at 78-81% and B at 74-77%, roughly one mark above the common HEC bands at each step. Any tool built on the generic Pakistani table will assign the wrong letter to marks that fall near a boundary.

Does UCP use relative or absolute grading?

The Rules and Regulations state that UCP in general follows the relative grading system, where final grades are distributed across the average performance of the class. The published percentage table gives the numerical equivalence of each letter. The one clear exception is an approved retake examination, which is graded on the absolute scale with no average or normalisation factor applied.

What CGPA must I maintain at UCP?

All undergraduates must hold a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00 to continue their studies, Master's students 2.50 and PhD scholars 3.00 throughout their academic career. Falling short puts you on warning at the time the semester result is declared; two consecutive warnings mean probation, and failing again after that drops you from the university roll.

How many courses can I repeat to improve my UCP CGPA?

Undergraduates may improve a maximum of six courses and graduate students three, not counting courses where an F is being replaced. Both the original and revised grades appear on the transcript, but only the better grade counts toward the CGPA. Students on probation must repeat courses graded below C at undergraduate level rather than take new ones.

What happens if my attendance drops below 75% at UCP?

A student must attend 75% of classes in each course and lab. Miss more than 25% of the total sessions and you are withdrawn from that course with a W grade, which carries no grade points and does not enter the GPA. No transfer of dues or tuition fee is permitted when a course withdrawal happens this way.

How long do I have to complete a UCP degree?

Counting from the date of first registration, every Bachelor's programme must be finished within a maximum of seven years and MS or MPhil programmes within four. A PhD scholar must clear coursework and the comprehensive examination within two years and qualify the synopsis within three, with an overall limit of seven years.
