IKGPTU works out CGPA by weighting every course grade by its credit hours. Multiply a course's grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, then divide the total quality points from all your semesters by the total credit hours those courses carry. The grade points come from the official IKGPTU grading scale shown below, a 8-band table topping out at 10.00 for O from 90%, so CGPA is reported out of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is P, awarded from 40%.

I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University grading scale

IKGPTU grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 8 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns O (10.00), and 40% is the lowest passing band (P). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

The criterion is outlined in Table 4. ... (b) Relative grading will be used for a class having 30 or more (>30) registered students'. Table 4 ('Absolute grading criterion') gives O/A+/A/B+/B/C/P/F = 10/9/8/7/6/5/4/0 for marks bands 90-100/80-89/70-79/60-69/50-59/45-49/40-44/<40 respectively. As with several other CBCS-era Indian technical universities, IKGPTU's DEFAULT method for larger classes is relative (mean/standard-deviation based, Table 5), so this dataset uses the university's own published absolute fallback table (Table 4) as the representative fixed scale; a student in a larger, relatively-graded class may see a different grade for an identical raw percentage depending on that class's own result distribution. brandColor is an approximation, not from a published brand guideline.

How grading works at IKGPTU

SGPA and CGPA at I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University follow the standard credit-weighted average formula - each course's grade point multiplied by its credits, summed and divided by total credits, per semester for SGPA and cumulatively for CGPA - but the university's own Credit Based System regulation is explicit that how a raw mark becomes a grade point depends on class size. Courses with 30 or more registered students are graded relatively, using that class's own mean and standard deviation to draw the grade boundaries, while smaller classes of fewer than 30 students use a fixed, published absolute percentage table running from F up to O.

Originally established as Punjab Technical University in 1997 and renamed in 2015 in honour of former Prime Minister I. K. Gujral, IKGPTU is headquartered in Kapurthala and is one of Punjab's principal affiliating technical universities, governing engineering, pharmacy, hotel management and management programmes across a large network of colleges statewide under one common Credit Based System.

Because a large first-year engineering class of several hundred students is graded relatively while a small final-year specialised elective might use the absolute table, no single percentage-to-grade mapping is universally true for every IKGPTU student in every course; this page therefore uses the university's own published absolute fallback table as the representative scale, while flagging that larger, relatively-graded cohorts may see somewhat different outcomes for the same raw score.

Worked example: a full semester on the IKGPTU scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the IKGPTU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the IKGPTU grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the O band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 6.00 = 18.00, 2 × 5.00 = 10.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 118.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 118.00 ÷ 15 = 7.86, the semester GPA for this term at IKGPTU.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 118.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 7.97.

The division actually gives 7.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 7.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which IKGPTU programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across IKGPTU’s degree programmes, including B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, B.Pharm, MBA and Hotel Management and Catering Technology. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

IKGPTU CGPA: frequently asked questions

What is IKGPTU's absolute grading table?

For classes of fewer than 30 registered students, IKGPTU's Credit Based System regulation sets: O (90-100%) = 10, A+ (80-89%) = 9, A (70-79%) = 8, B+ (60-69%) = 7, B (50-59%) = 6, C (45-49%) = 5, P (40-44%) = 4, and F (below 40%) = 0.

Does every IKGPTU course use the same fixed percentage table?

No. IKGPTU's regulation states classes of 30 or more students are graded relatively - using that specific class's own mean and standard deviation to set grade boundaries - and only smaller classes (fewer than 30 students) use the fixed absolute percentage table shown on this page.

What is the minimum percentage to pass a course at IKGPTU?

A student needs at least 40% to be awarded a passing grade ('P' or higher); the regulation states that no student scoring 40% or more can be given the failing 'F' grade, while scoring below 40% (or below 20% under a separate attendance/component rule) results in an F.

How does IKGPTU convert CGPA to a percentage?

IKGPTU's grade cards report SGPA and CGPA rather than a headline percentage; students commonly use a CGPA x 10 approximation for external purposes, though this is a widely used convention rather than an official formula printed on the transcript itself.

What was IKGPTU previously called?

IKGPTU was established in 1997 as Punjab Technical University (PTU) and was renamed I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University in 2015 in honour of the former Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral, who hailed from the Jalandhar region where the university was originally based.
