The absolute grading scheme is transcribed verbatim into gradingPlan: A 93-100 4.00, A- 87-92 3.67, B+ 82-86 3.33, B 77-81 3.00, B- 72-76 2.67, C+ 68-71 2.33, C 64-67 2.00, C- 60-63 1.67, F 0-59 0.00, with I (Incomplete) and W (Course Withdrawn) outside the calculation. IBA's scale is far stricter than the HEC pattern - an A needs 93% rather than 85% - and there is NO D+ or D grade at all: 59% or below is an F. The same page states that faculty may choose either the absolute or a relative scheme; that 60% of the course grade comes from semester work and 40% from the final examination; that CGPA is the sum of (credit hours x grade points) divided by the sum of credit hours; that a student must maintain CGPA 2.2 cumulatively and is dropped immediately below 2.0; that CGPA between 2.00 and 2.19 brings a warning and probation; that a BBA/BS or MBA finalist between 2.0 and 2.2 must repeat a semester or courses to reach 2.2 before the degree is awarded; and that when a course is repeated the better of the two attempts counts with no averaging, though a student who repeats is ineligible for the Gold Medal and the Dean's List.

IBA was established in 1955 as the USAID-financed Institute of Public and Business Administration on the US MBA model, with programmes commencing in the YMCA building in Karachi and technical support from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Until 1994 the University of Karachi awarded its degrees; the Sindh Assembly then granted IBA its own charter and degree-awarding status under the IBA Act 1994 (amended 2013 and 2018).

How grading works at IBA Karachi
IBA Karachi computes your CGPA as the sum of credit hours multiplied by grade points, divided by the sum of credit hours, and recalculates it every semester, including summer terms. The grading plan in force since Spring 2010 is one of the toughest in Pakistan: an A needs 93% or more, A- covers 87-92, B+ 82-86, B 77-81, B- 72-76, C+ 68-71, C 64-67 and C- 60-63, and there is no D grade at all, so anything at 59% or below is an outright F worth zero. Instructors may award grades on that absolute table or on a relative scheme, and they announce which at the start of the course.
The consequence is that IBA percentages and IBA grade points feel very far apart. A mark of 85% that would be a clean A almost anywhere else in Karachi is a B+ here. Course grades are built 60% from semester work, including two term examinations, quizzes, reports and presentations, and 40% from the final examination. IBA also sets its academic floor higher than most: you must hold a cumulative 2.2 rather than 2.0, and the Dean's List starts at 3.5. The same scale runs across BBA, BS (Computer Science), BS (Accounting & Finance) and BS (Social Sciences & Liberal Arts) at the Main and City campuses.
Worked example: a full semester on the IBA Karachi scale
Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the IBA Karachi grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.
| Course | Credit hrs | Marks /100 | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core course I | 3 | 97 | A | 4.00 | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| Core course II | 4 | 90 | A- | 3.67 | 4 × 3.67 = 14.68 |
| Core course III | 3 | 79 | B | 3.00 | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Elective | 3 | 74 | B- | 2.67 | 3 × 2.67 = 8.01 |
| Lab / practical | 2 | 66 | C | 2.00 | 2 × 2.00 = 4.00 |
| Total | 15 | 47.69 |
Step by step
- Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the IBA Karachi grading table. 97 out of 100 is 97%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
- Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.67 = 14.68, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.67 = 8.01, 2 × 2.00 = 4.00.
- Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 47.69 quality points across 15 credit hours.
- Divide to get the semester GPA. 47.69 ÷ 15 = 3.17, the semester GPA for this term at IBA Karachi.
- Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 47.69) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.19.
The division actually gives 3.1793; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 3.17. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.
Which IBA Karachi programmes use this scale?
The same grading plan applies across IBA Karachi’s degree programmes, including BBA, BS (Computer Science), BS (Accounting & Finance), BS (Social Sciences & Liberal Arts) and BS (Economics). Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.
