Aga Khan University CGPA Calculator

Karachi, Sindh · private · est. 1983

CGPA at Aga Khan University is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. Aga Khan University awards those grade points through the official Aga Khan University grading scale shown below, a 10-band table that runs from 4.00 (A, 90% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is C-, awarded from 55%.

Aga Khan University grading scale

Aga Khan University grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 10 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns A (4.00), and 55% is the lowest passing band (C-). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

This is AKU's default grading scheme 'applicable to all undergraduate and graduate programmes of study' unless an Academic Unit's Programme Committee has approved otherwise (AKU is a health-sciences/nursing/education-focused chartered university, not a general BS-degree mill, so most cohorts are graduate/professional). Two distinctive features: (1) the effective PASS-WITH-CREDIT line is 60%, not the usual Pakistani 50%, grades of 55-59% ('C-', GP 1.7) are explicitly 'Marginal Fail / Work below expectation' and the policy states a student 'will not receive credit for courses in which a final grade of C- is received', even though C- still carries a non-zero grade point of 1.7 that feeds into GPA/CGPA per the university's own table; only <55% is the zero-point 'F'. (2) A and A+ are both flat 4.0 (90-94% and 95-100% respectively) rather than a further-differentiated top band. Other non-GPA grades in the same table: P (pass, no GPA effect), I (incomplete), IP (in progress, thesis only), W (withdrawn, no GPA effect), AG (aegrotat standing, no GPA effect), AU (audit). No explicit asterisk-marked 'deficiency course' convention was found in this policy, so deficiencyCourses is omitted rather than guessed.

How grading works at Aga Khan University

A semester's GPA is nothing more than a weighted average: every course's grade point is multiplied by its credit hours, those figures are added together, and the sum is divided by the credit hours attempted, with a CGPA being the identical calculation extended over the whole academic record rather than one term. Aga Khan University applies this system to its Bachelor of Science in Nursing and other non-clinical degree programmes, and, like most HEC-aligned institutions, keeps the ceiling at 4.0 for those tracks.

Chartered in 1983 as Pakistan's first private university, AKU built its reputation on medicine and nursing long before most of today's private universities existed, and it still runs its MBBS and BDS years through examination-board style professional assessments rather than a pure semester GPA, while BScN, allied health and education programmes such as those under the Institute for Educational Development follow the standard credit-hour system described above. A Karachi campus with international affiliations, AKU also examines students at teaching sites outside Pakistan under the same academic rules.

No single public grading table covering every AKU programme was available while this page was written, so the semester-based degrees here are shown against the general HEC-style scale rather than a confirmed AKU document; professional years assessed by examination boards fall outside GPA altogether and are not represented by these bands at all. Check your own faculty handbook, particularly if you are on a clinical programme, for the assessment scheme that actually applies to you.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Aga Khan University grading table. 92 out of 100 is 92%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.70 = 14.80, 3 × 3.30 = 9.90, 3 × 2.70 = 8.10, 2 × 2.30 = 4.60.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 49.40 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 49.40 ÷ 15 = 3.29, the semester GPA for this term at Aga Khan University.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 49.40) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.22.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Aga Khan University programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Aga Khan University’s degree programmes, including MBBS, BScN Nursing, MA Education and Master of Medicine. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Aga Khan University CGPA: frequently asked questions

What CGPA is required to avoid probation or graduate from a semester-based AKU programme?

AKU has not published one universal probation or graduation figure that this page can confirm for every programme, and clinical years assessed through examination boards do not use a CGPA at all. For its semester-based degrees, such as BScN, the general benchmark used across most HEC-aligned Pakistani universities is a CGPA near 2.0 as the floor for both good standing and graduation, though AKU may set its own, possibly higher, figure, so check your specific programme handbook.

What is considered a strong CGPA at AKU?

Without a confirmed AKU-specific honours scale on record here, the broad Pakistani convention of treating anything above roughly 3.5 as an outstanding CGPA, 3.0 to 3.5 as a solidly good one, and comfortably above 2.0 as a safe pass gives a reasonable starting point. Given AKU's academic reputation, individual schools such as Nursing and Midwifery may hold their own students to visibly higher internal expectations than this general marker suggests.

How do SGPA and CGPA differ for an AKU student?

SGPA reflects only the courses completed in a single semester, so a demanding clinical rotation or a heavy practicum term can pull it down temporarily even for a strong student. CGPA averages every semester finished so far, weighted by credit hours, so it moves more slowly and represents the whole degree rather than one term, which is why AKU and most other universities use CGPA, not SGPA, to decide final honours and graduation eligibility.

Does AKU use a different grading scale from the HEC standard?

This page has not located a separate published AKU grading table, so its semester-based programmes are shown against the common HEC-aligned shape most Pakistani universities share, with grade points running up to 4.0 and a pass mark generally in the fifties. AKU's clinical years, assessed through professional examination boards rather than semester coursework, sit entirely outside this comparison and follow their own pass-and-distinction system instead of a CGPA.

What happens to an F, a withdrawal or an incomplete at AKU?

As at most Pakistani universities, an F carries no grade points and pulls the CGPA down until the course is retaken and passed, which most academic policies require before a degree is confirmed. A withdrawal taken before the deadline is usually excluded from the GPA rather than treated as a failure, and an incomplete is a temporary placeholder pending outstanding coursework, clinical hours or a delayed assessment, common in health-sciences programmes with practical components.

How many credit hours does a typical AKU semester carry?

Nursing and allied health programmes generally run a similar fifteen-to-eighteen credit-hour semester to other Pakistani BS degrees, though clinical placements and supervised practicum hours can add substantially to the time commitment without adding proportionally to the credit-hour count. Because GPA weights by credit hours rather than by time spent, a heavy clinical block does not always move the average as much as its workload might suggest.
