It has only 9 letter grades with NO minus variant below B (no A-, B-, C- or D- letters used) and non-standard grade-point steps of a flat 0.4 per band from D+ upward (D 1.0, D+ 1.5, C 2.0, C+ 2.4, B 2.8, B+ 3.2, A 3.6, A+ 4.0) rather than the common thirds-based 0.33/0.67 steps seen elsewhere. The same official page notes the university separately maintains an older, broader-band scale (e.g. A=80-100%, B=60-79%) for 2K20-and-earlier batches; the narrower current scale above is used here as it is the scale in force for new admissions. Minimum qualifying CGPA for undergraduate degree completion is 2.00.
How grading works at Sindh University
Rather than a narrow specialism, Sindh University teaches a genuinely broad spread of disciplines, and across every one of them CGPA comes down to the same weighted sum used at any HEC-aligned Pakistani institution: grade point per course multiplied by credit hours, the products added across a term, and the total divided by credit hours attempted, with the running version of that sum across every semester becoming CGPA out of a maximum of 4.0.
Its founding year, 1947, is the same year Pakistan itself came into being, which makes Sindh University in Jamshoro one of the country's oldest seats of higher learning, now home to faculties in Law, Mass Communication, Pharmacy, Business Administration and the pure sciences, with LLB, Pharm-D and MBA among its long-running professional lines. Age and scale being what they are, grading emphasis can differ somewhat between a decades-old department and a newer one, even under one formal, university-wide examination policy.
No single, current grading table published centrally by Sindh University was confirmed while writing this page, so the calculator applies the general HEC-default bands rather than a document specific to the university. Check with your own faculty office or examination branch for the exact percentage cut-offs in use, treating a printed result card as the final authority over any general scale shown here.
Worked example: a full semester on the Sindh University scale
Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Sindh University grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.
| Course | Credit hrs | Marks /100 | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core course I | 3 | 93 | A+ | 4.00 | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| Core course II | 4 | 82 | A | 3.60 | 4 × 3.60 = 14.40 |
| Core course III | 3 | 72 | B | 2.80 | 3 × 2.80 = 8.40 |
| Elective | 3 | 67 | C+ | 2.40 | 3 × 2.40 = 7.20 |
| Lab / practical | 2 | 57 | D+ | 1.50 | 2 × 1.50 = 3.00 |
| Total | 15 | 45.00 |
Step by step
- Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Sindh University grading table. 93 out of 100 is 93%, which falls in the A+ band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
- Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.60 = 14.40, 3 × 2.80 = 8.40, 3 × 2.40 = 7.20, 2 × 1.50 = 3.00.
- Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 45.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
- Divide to get the semester GPA. 45.00 ÷ 15 = 3.00, the semester GPA for this term at Sindh University.
- Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 45.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.15.
Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.
