Belagavi, Karnataka · public · est. 1998

To calculate a CGPA at VTU, turn each course mark into a grade point using the official VTU grading scale shown below, multiply that grade point by the course's credit hours, and divide the running total of quality points by the running total of credit hours. The Visvesvaraya Technological University table has 7 bands, S (10.00) starts at 90%, and CGPA is reported out of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is E, awarded from 35%.

Visvesvaraya Technological University grading scale

VTU grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 7 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns S (10.00), and 35% is the lowest passing band (E). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

Under Outcome Based Education (OBE) and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)', effective from Academic Year 2021-22, clause 21OB11.2: 'The University adopts an absolute grading system wherein the marks are converted to grades... The grading system with the letter grades and the assigned range of marks under the absolute grading system shall be as given below.' The table maps S/A/B/C/D/E/F to grade points 10/9/8/7/6/4/0 over percentage bands 90-100/80-89/70-79/60-69/45-59/35-44/0-34 respectively. VTU explicitly calls this 'absolute grading' (not the relative/moderated grading many other Indian technical universities use), which is why it was chosen for this dataset over less clean-cut alternatives. brandColor is an approximation of VTU's blue-toned crest, not lifted from an official brand/visual-identity guideline document, since none was located.

How grading works at VTU

CGPA at Visvesvaraya Technological University is worked out by weighting the grade point earned in every course by that course's credits, summing those products across a semester (or across the whole programme for CGPA), and dividing by the total credits attempted. VTU converts a student's combined internal (CIE) and semester-end (SEE) marks in each course into one of seven letter grades - S, A, B, C, D, E or F - on a fixed, published percentage scale rather than curving results against classmates, which VTU's own regulations call 'absolute grading' to distinguish it from the relative, bell-curve schemes several other Indian technical universities use.

Established in 1998 and headquartered in Belagavi, VTU is one of India's largest affiliating technical universities, overseeing engineering, architecture, pharmacy and management education at several hundred colleges across Karnataka rather than teaching students directly on a single campus. Because so many colleges share one grading regulation, a VTU CGPA is directly comparable across institutions in a way that is not always true at universities where each affiliated college sets its own internal scale.

A course is only awarded a passing grade point (E or above, 4.0 minimum) once a student clears the minimum marks threshold set out in the same regulation, and SGPA/CGPA calculations use exactly the grade points shown in the table below - not the raw percentage - so two students with different marks inside the same band end up with identical grade points for that course.

Worked example: a full semester on the VTU scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the VTU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the VTU grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the S band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 7.00 = 21.00, 2 × 6.00 = 12.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 123.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 123.00 ÷ 15 = 8.20, the semester GPA for this term at VTU.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 123.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 8.05.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which VTU programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across VTU’s degree programmes, including B.E. Computer Science and Engineering, B.E. Mechanical Engineering, M.Tech, MBA and MCA. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

VTU CGPA: frequently asked questions

How is CGPA calculated under VTU's absolute grading system?

Each course's grade point (from the S-to-F table) is multiplied by that course's credits, these credit points are summed across all courses attempted, and the total is divided by the sum of the credits - done per semester for SGPA and cumulatively for CGPA. Because VTU uses absolute, not relative, grading, the same percentage always produces the same grade point regardless of how the rest of the class performed.

What percentage does a VTU student need to score an S grade?

A minimum of 90% of the combined CIE and SEE marks in a course is required for the top 'S' grade, which carries 10 grade points under VTU's 2021-22 regulations. This is a fixed threshold, not adjusted to the class average.

What is the minimum passing grade at VTU?

A student must score at least a 'E' grade (35% and above, worth 4 grade points) to pass a course under VTU's absolute grading scale; a mark below 35% results in an 'F' grade with zero grade points, and the course must be cleared again.

Does VTU convert CGPA to a percentage on the marksheet?

VTU issues grade cards showing SGPA and CGPA rather than a headline percentage. Where a percentage-equivalent figure is needed for external purposes (job applications, further study), students commonly multiply CGPA by 10, though VTU's own regulations do not print a single official multiplier on the transcript itself.

Is VTU's grading the same across every affiliated engineering college?

Yes - because VTU is an affiliating university rather than a teaching one, every engineering, architecture and management college under it follows the same CBCS regulations and the same S-to-F absolute grading table, so a given percentage score converts to the same grade point no matter which VTU-affiliated college a student attends.
