CGPA at A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. KTU awards those grade points through the official KTU grading scale shown below, a 10-band table that runs from 10.00 (S, 90% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is P, awarded from 50%.

A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University grading scale

KTU grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 10 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns S (10.00), and 50% is the lowest passing band (P). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

P. J. Abdul Kalam Technological University Academic Regulations for B.Tech, 2019' (Annexure 1), clause R6.16 'Grading is based on the overall % marks obtained by the student in a course', table 'Grade and Grade Points': S/A+/A/B+/B/C+/C/D/P/F = 10/9.0/8.5/8.0/7.5/7.0/6.5/6.0/5.5/0 for percentage bands 90-100/85-89/80-84/75-79/70-74/65-69/60-64/55-59/50-54/<50 respectively. Same regulation text independently cross-checked against an affiliated-college mirror (mbits.ac.in) of the official KTU circular. Note a secondary condition not representable in a flat percentage table: clause R6.15 states 'F' is awarded if EITHER the overall CIE+ESE mark is below 50% OR the End Semester Examination mark alone is below 40%, even if the combined percentage would otherwise clear 50% - this edge case is not captured by the single percentage band shown here. KTU's CGPA-to-percentage multiplier (10xCGPA, per Academic Council U.O.No. 1584/2023/KTU dated 29.06.2023) was separately confirmed from an official university order but is a distinct figure from the marks-to-grade-point table itself. brandColor is an approximation, not from a published brand guideline.

How grading works at KTU

KTU works out SGPA by multiplying each course's grade point by its credits and dividing the total by the credits taken in that semester, with CGPA repeating the same weighting across the whole B.Tech programme so far. What makes KTU distinctive among Indian technical universities is how finely graded its scale is: instead of the common ten-point jumps most universities use, KTU spreads ten letter grades (S down to F) across half-point increments, so a course graded 'A' at 8.5 points sits precisely between B+ (8.0) and A+ (9.0) rather than there being a wide single band worth a flat 8 or 9.

Established in 2014 and headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, KTU consolidated engineering education across Kerala under one university after having previously been administered through the state's separate Directorate of Technical Education and university-specific affiliations. It now governs B.Tech, M.Tech and allied programmes at a large network of colleges statewide, applying the same regulation and the same grading table to every affiliated institute so results are directly comparable across colleges.

A course counts as passed only once a student's overall percentage reaches 50% and their End Semester Examination mark alone reaches at least 40% - both conditions have to be met, so a strong internal-assessment score cannot by itself carry a weak exam performance over the line; falling short of either produces an F grade worth zero points, and the course must be cleared again.

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the KTU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the KTU grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the S band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 8.50 = 34.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 7.00 = 21.00, 2 × 6.50 = 13.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 122.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 122.00 ÷ 15 = 8.13, the semester GPA for this term at KTU.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 122.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 8.03.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which KTU programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across KTU’s degree programmes, including B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.Tech, B.Arch and MBA. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

KTU CGPA: frequently asked questions

What is KTU's full grade-point scale?

KTU's 2019 B.Tech regulation lists ten grades: S (90-100%) = 10, A+ (85-89%) = 9.0, A (80-84%) = 8.5, B+ (75-79%) = 8.0, B (70-74%) = 7.5, C+ (65-69%) = 7.0, C (60-64%) = 6.5, D (55-59%) = 6.0, P (50-54%) = 5.5, and F (below 50%, or an End Semester Examination mark below 40% regardless of the overall total) = 0.

Why does KTU use half-point grade increments like 8.5 and 7.5?

KTU's ten-band scale spaces its grade points every 0.5 across a 5-point range from S (10) down to P (5.5), giving finer-grained differentiation between adjacent 5-percentage-point bands than the flat single-point jumps (e.g. straight 9, 8, 7) many other Indian universities use for wider 10-percentage-point bands.

Can a student fail a KTU course even after scoring 50% overall?

Yes. KTU's regulation requires BOTH an overall (CIE+ESE) percentage of at least 50% AND an End Semester Examination score of at least 40% on its own. A student who clears the 50% overall total but scores below 40% in the End Semester Examination itself is still awarded an F grade.

How does KTU convert CGPA to a percentage?

Following a 2023 Academic Council resolution, KTU's official B.Tech (2019 scheme) formula is Percentage = CGPA x 10, replacing an earlier formula that subtracted a 2.5 constant. This applies to the CGPA figure as a whole, not to individual course marks.

Is KTU's grading system the same at every affiliated engineering college in Kerala?

Yes - KTU sets one common academic regulation for all its affiliated B.Tech colleges across Kerala, so the same percentage in a course produces the identical grade point regardless of which KTU-affiliated institute a student attends.
