This document's table is scoped specifically to the university's Faculty of Management (MMS programme); the University of Mumbai's broader CBCGS scheme for other faculties is described by multiple independent secondary sources with a similar but not always identical O-to-F structure, so this dataset uses the directly-verified Faculty of Management table as the representative scale and flags that other faculties/programmes may publish their own slightly different bands. brandColor is an approximation, not from a published brand guideline.
How grading works at Mumbai University
SGPA at the University of Mumbai is the weighted average of a semester's grade points, calculated by multiplying each course's grade point by its credits and dividing by the total credits taken, and CGPA carries the identical weighting across every semester completed - the standard formula behind Mumbai's Choice Based Semester and Grading System (CBSGS). What is worth noting for Mumbai specifically is that individual course marks are graded into one of eight flat bands from F up to O, so two students scoring anywhere within the same five-percentage-point band (say, 70% and 74%) receive an identical grade point for that course despite the difference in raw marks.
Founded in 1857, the University of Mumbai is one of India's oldest and largest universities, with a vast network of affiliated colleges across Mumbai and the wider Maharashtra region spanning arts, science, commerce, engineering, law, management and mass media. Because of the university's scale, exact grading circulars can vary in small ways between faculties and between older CBSGS-era regulations and newer CBCGS ones, but the underlying credit-weighted SGPA/CGPA formula is consistent throughout.
A course counts as passed once a student clears the 'P' grade floor at 50%; scoring below that returns an F worth zero grade points and no credit, so the course has to be attempted again before it can count toward the degree.
Worked example: a full semester on the Mumbai University scale
Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Mumbai University grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.
| Course | Credit hrs | Marks /100 | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core course I | 3 | 90 | O | 10.00 | 3 × 10.00 = 30.00 |
| Core course II | 4 | 77 | A+ | 9.00 | 4 × 9.00 = 36.00 |
| Core course III | 3 | 72 | A | 8.00 | 3 × 8.00 = 24.00 |
| Elective | 3 | 62 | B | 6.00 | 3 × 6.00 = 18.00 |
| Lab / practical | 2 | 57 | C | 5.00 | 2 × 5.00 = 10.00 |
| Total | 15 | 118.00 |
Step by step
- Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Mumbai University grading table. 90 out of 100 is 90%, which falls in the O band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
- Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 6.00 = 18.00, 2 × 5.00 = 10.00.
- Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 118.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
- Divide to get the semester GPA. 118.00 ÷ 15 = 7.86, the semester GPA for this term at Mumbai University.
- Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 118.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 7.97.
The division actually gives 7.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 7.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.
Which Mumbai University programmes use this scale?
The same grading plan applies across Mumbai University’s degree programmes, including BCom, BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media), LLB, MBA and Bachelor of Engineering. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.
