Champaign, Illinois · public · est. 1867

CGPA at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. Illinois awards those grade points through the official Illinois grading scale shown below, a 13-band table that runs from 4.00 (A+, 97% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D-, awarded from 60%.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign grading scale

Illinois grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 13 bands. A mark of 97% or above earns A+ (4.00), and 60% is the lowest passing band (D-). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

Confirms the full grade-point table: A+=4.00, A=4.00, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.00, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.00, C-=1.67, D+=1.33, D=1.00, D-=0.67, F=0.00. A+ is capped at the same 4.00 as A rather than exceeding it. Per the same registrar's grading-history notes, the university moved from an older A=5.0 scale to the current A=4.0 scale beginning Fall Semester 1996, and plus/minus grades were not awarded at all before that same change.

How grading works at Illinois

UIUC computes GPA with the standard credit-weighted formula on a full thirteen-grade plus/minus scale, and its registrar is explicit that A+ exists on a transcript but is capped at the same 4.00 as a plain A rather than granting any bonus above it, the same deliberate design choice Berkeley and Purdue make, though Stanford and Arizona State go the other way and let A+ exceed 4.0.

Chartered in 1867 as Illinois's land-grant public research university, UIUC's current grading scale has a specific, documented starting point: the registrar's own records show the university used an older A=5.0 grading system before switching to the now-standard A=4.0 scale beginning Fall Semester 1996, and that plus/minus grades were not awarded at all before that same 1996 change, meaning any UIUC transcript from before the mid-1990s was graded on a genuinely different, non-plus/minus scale than today's students see.

Because UIUC's registrar publishes the full A+ through F table with exact grade points for every step, this page's letter-grade and point columns are drawn directly from that official document rather than a generic assumption. UIUC does not publish one official percentage-to-letter-grade table applied identically to every course, though, so the percentage bands here follow the common convention layered on top of UIUC's own confirmed grade-point values.

Worked example: a full semester on the Illinois scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Illinois grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Illinois grading table. 99 out of 100 is 99%, which falls in the A+ band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.67 = 14.68, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.00 = 6.00, 2 × 1.33 = 2.66.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 44.34 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 44.34 ÷ 15 = 2.95, the semester GPA for this term at Illinois.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 44.34) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.14.

The division actually gives 2.9560; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 2.95. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Illinois programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Illinois’s degree programmes, including Grainger College of Engineering, Gies College of Business, Computer Science and College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Illinois CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does an A+ raise your GPA above 4.0 at UIUC?

No, UIUC's registrar confirms A+ carries the same 4.00 grade points as a plain A, with no bonus above it. This differs from Stanford and Arizona State, which do award A+ a value above 4.0, and matches Berkeley and Purdue's approach of capping it at 4.0 instead.

What is UIUC's full official grade-point scale?

Per the UIUC Office of the Registrar: A+=4.00, A=4.00, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.00, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.00, C-=1.67, D+=1.33, D=1.00, D-=0.67, F=0.00, the full thirteen-grade plus/minus ladder with no gaps at either end.

Has UIUC always used a 4.0 GPA scale?

No. UIUC's own registrar records confirm the university graded on an older A=5.0 scale before switching to the current A=4.0 system starting Fall Semester 1996, and that plus/minus grading itself was introduced at that same time, older UIUC transcripts predate both changes.

Does UIUC publish an official percentage cutoff for each grade?

Not campus-wide. UIUC's registrar documents the letter grades and their exact grade-point values centrally, but the specific percentage or rubric an instructor uses to assign a grade in a given course is set at the course level, as at most large public research universities. This calculator's percentage bands are a standard approximation on top of UIUC's confirmed grade-point table.

How is UIUC's cumulative GPA different from a single semester's GPA?

A semester GPA reflects only that term's courses and can swing with an unusually hard or light load. UIUC's cumulative GPA weights every letter-graded course completed across a student's entire UIUC record by its credit hours, and is the figure used for academic standing, Dean's List eligibility, and graduation honors.
