The Ohio State University CGPA Calculator

Columbus, Ohio · public · est. 1870

Ohio State works out CGPA by weighting every course grade by its credit hours. Multiply a course's grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, then divide the total quality points from all your semesters by the total credit hours those courses carry. The grade points come from the official Ohio State grading scale shown below, a 11-band table topping out at 4.00 for A from 93%, so CGPA is reported out of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded from 60%.

The Ohio State University grading scale

Ohio State grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 11 bands. A mark of 93% or above earns A (4.00), and 60% is the lowest passing band (D). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

Confirms the exact grade-point table: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, E(failure)=0.0. Notably, Ohio State does NOT use A+ or D- at all, the plus/minus system was added Winter Quarter 1976 but was deliberately scoped to only A-, B+/B/B-, C+/C/C-, and D+/D, so A stays the hard 4.0 ceiling and D is the lowest passing plus/minus grade before failure.

How grading works at Ohio State

Ohio State computes GPA the standard credit-weighted way, and its registrar publishes the exact table plainly: A is worth a flat 4.0 with no A+ above it, and grades step down in the usual roughly-a-third-of-a-point increments through A-, B+/B/B-, and C+/C/C-. The scale then narrows at the bottom, Ohio State offers only D+ and D as passing D-range grades, with no D- at all, before dropping straight to E (failure) at zero points.

Founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution and now one of the largest single campuses in the United States, Ohio State's plus/minus grading system has a specific, documented history: it was added starting Winter Quarter 1976, replacing a purely whole-letter scale, but the university deliberately chose not to extend plus/minus to the very top or very bottom of the scale, so A and D remain the only grades in their respective letter groups without a modifier.

Ohio State's official transcript key also lists a long roster of non-GPA marks, Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), various withdrawal and audit codes, Pass (P), and more, none of which carry grade points or affect the cumulative average, which follows the common practice at large public research universities of keeping pass/fail and administrative marks entirely outside the numeric GPA. Ohio State does not publish a single official percentage-to-letter conversion applied to every course, so the percentage bands here use the common convention layered on top of the university's own confirmed, registrar-sourced grade-point values.

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Ohio State grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Ohio State grading table. 97 out of 100 is 97%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.30 = 13.20, 3 × 2.70 = 8.10, 3 × 2.30 = 6.90, 2 × 1.70 = 3.40.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 43.60 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 43.60 ÷ 15 = 2.90, the semester GPA for this term at Ohio State.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 43.60) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.13.

The division actually gives 2.9067; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 2.90. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Ohio State programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Ohio State’s degree programmes, including Fisher College of Business, College of Engineering, Agricultural Sciences and Journalism and Communication. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Ohio State CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does Ohio State use A+ or D-?

No to both. Ohio State's registrar confirms A is the highest grade at a flat 4.0 with no A+ above it, and D is the lowest passing D-range grade with no D- below it, the university's plus/minus system, added in 1976, was deliberately scoped to skip both ends of the scale.

What is Ohio State's official grade-point scale?

Per the Ohio State Office of the Registrar's Transcript Key: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, and E (failure)=0.0. Note the failing grade is lettered E, matching Michigan's convention rather than the more common F.

When did Ohio State start using plus and minus grades?

Ohio State's own transcript key documents that plus and minus values were added starting Winter Quarter 1976. Before that, Ohio State graded on a purely whole-letter A/B/C/D/E scale with no intermediate steps.

Which Ohio State grades don't count toward GPA?

Ohio State's transcript key lists numerous non-GPA marks, Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), various withdrawal codes, Pass (P), Satisfactory (S), Audit, and others, none of which carry grade points or factor into the cumulative average, the same treatment most large research universities give administrative and pass/fail marks.

Does Ohio State publish a percentage cutoff for each grade?

Not university-wide. Ohio State's registrar documents the letter grades and their exact grade-point values centrally, but the specific percentage or rubric an instructor uses to assign a given letter is set at the course level, as at most large public universities. This calculator's percentage bands are a standard approximation on top of Ohio State's own confirmed grade-point table.
