Hyderabad, Telangana · public · est. 2008

CGPA at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. JNTUH awards those grade points through the official JNTUH grading scale shown below, a 7-band table that runs from 10.00 (O, 90% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is C, awarded from 40%.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad grading scale

JNTUH grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 7 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns O (10.00), and 40% is the lowest passing band (C). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

The table awards O/A+/A/B+/B/C/F grade points 10/9/8/7/6/5/0 for percentage bands >=90 / 80-89 / 70-79 / 60-69 / 50-59 / 40-49 / <40 respectively; clause 9.5 explicitly notes a letter grade 'does not indicate any specific percentage of marks... but only the range', i.e. every mark inside a band earns the same flat grade point. This is JNTUH's own restated version of the common UGC/AICTE model table, not a university-specific curve. brandColor is an approximation, not from a published brand guideline.

How grading works at JNTUH

SGPA at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad is the credit-weighted average of every course's grade point in a semester, and CGPA extends the same weighting across every semester completed so far - both computed directly from JNTUH's own 10-point absolute grading table rather than from a curve fitted to each class's results. A student's combined Continuous Internal Evaluation and Semester End Examination percentage in a course is looked up against a fixed band (O down to F) to fetch a grade point, which is then multiplied by that course's credits and summed.

JNTUH came into being in 2008 when the original, much older Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was split by the Andhra Pradesh government into three independent universities serving Hyderabad, Kakinada and Anantapur separately; JNTUH kept the Kukatpally, Hyderabad campus and today affiliates a very large network of engineering, pharmacy and management colleges across Telangana. Its regulations describe themselves explicitly as following 'UGC/AICTE guidelines' for the grading table, which is why the same O-A+-A-B+-B-C-F structure recurs, sometimes with small variations, at many other engineering universities across India that adopted the same model regulation.

A course only counts as passed once a student clears a 'C' grade (40% and above); anything below that returns an 'F' with zero grade points and no credit, so an F pulls both SGPA and CGPA down until the course is repeated and cleared.

Worked example: a full semester on the JNTUH scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the JNTUH grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the JNTUH grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the O band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 7.00 = 21.00, 2 × 6.00 = 12.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 123.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 123.00 ÷ 15 = 8.20, the semester GPA for this term at JNTUH.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 123.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 8.05.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which JNTUH programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across JNTUH’s degree programmes, including B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, MBA, MCA and M.Tech. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

JNTUH CGPA: frequently asked questions

What is the JNTUH grading scale from percentage to grade point?

JNTUH's R22 Academic Regulations map percentages to grade points as O (90% and above) = 10, A+ (80-89%) = 9, A (70-79%) = 8, B+ (60-69%) = 7, B (50-59%) = 6, C (40-49%) = 5, and F (below 40%) = 0, describing this explicitly as a '10-point absolute grading system... as per UGC/AICTE guidelines'.

How does JNTUH calculate SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the sum of (credits x grade point) for every course registered in a semester, divided by the total credits registered that semester. CGPA repeats the same calculation across all semesters completed so far. Both are rounded to two decimal places under JNTUH's regulations.

What CGPA does JNTUH require to be awarded the B.Tech degree?

Students must complete 160 credits with a CGPA of at least 5.0 to be eligible for the B.Tech degree under JNTUH's R22 regulations - the same minimum 'C' grade floor (5.0 grade points) that applies to passing an individual course.

Why is JNTUH's grading table the same as many other Indian technical universities?

JNTUH's own regulation cites 'UGC/AICTE guidelines' as the source of its O/A+/A/B+/B/C/F structure. Because the UGC and AICTE published a common model grading table for engineering programmes nationally, several other affiliating technical universities publish very similar - though not always identical - percentage bands.

How is a JNTUH CGPA converted to a percentage?

JNTUH's regulations report SGPA and CGPA on the transcript rather than a headline percentage. Where a percentage-equivalent is required externally, students commonly see a CGPA x 10 approximation cited, though this is a convention used for external forms rather than a formula printed on the official JNTUH grade sheet itself.
