Gujarat Technological University CGPA Calculator
Ahmedabad, Gujarat · public · est. 2007
To calculate a CGPA at GTU, turn each course mark into a grade point using the official GTU grading scale shown below, multiply that grade point by the course's credit hours, and divide the running total of quality points by the running total of credit hours. The Gujarat Technological University table has 8 bands, AA (10.00) starts at 85%, and CGPA is reported out of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is DD, awarded from 35%.

Gujarat Technological University grading scale
GTU grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 8 bands. A mark of 85% or above earns AA (10.00), and 35% is the lowest passing band (DD). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 0–34 | FF | 0.00 |
| 35–39 | DD | 4.00 |
| 40–44 | CD | 5.00 |
| 45–54 | CC | 6.00 |
| 55–64 | BC | 7.00 |
| 65–74 | BB | 8.00 |
| 75–84 | AB | 9.00 |

The underlying marks-to-grade-point table itself (AA=85-100=10, AB=75-84=9, BB=65-74=8, BC=55-64=7, CC=45-54=6, CD=40-44=5, DD=35-39=4, FF=<35=0) was directly confirmed for the AA-CC portion via GTU's own 'Assessment Module for MCA Course' (gtu.ac.in/syllabus/assessmentmoduleformca.pdf, official gtu.ac.in domain), and the full 8-band table including CD/DD is corroborated identically across multiple independent secondary sources (student aggregator sites) citing the same GTU ordinance - no single officially-hosted PDF containing the complete 8-row table for B.E./B.Tech (as opposed to MCA) could be directly retrieved during this research pass, so the CD/DD rows should be treated as well-corroborated rather than independently primary-verified. brandColor is an approximation, not from a published brand guideline.
How grading works at GTU
Gujarat Technological University reports a Semester Performance Index (SPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) rather than using the SGPA/CGPA labels common elsewhere, but the underlying arithmetic is the same credit-weighted average: each course's grade point is multiplied by its credits, the products are summed, and the total is divided by credits attempted. What is distinctive about GTU is its two-letter grade codes - AA, AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD and FF - which read almost like a report card shorthand rather than the single letters (O, A, B...) most other Indian universities use, though the underlying 10-to-0 point scale works the same way.
Established in 2007, GTU consolidated technical education across Gujarat under a single affiliating university, taking over responsibility for engineering, pharmacy, management and diploma programmes previously spread across multiple examining bodies in the state. It is now one of India's largest technical universities by number of affiliated colleges, headquartered in Ahmedabad.
GTU's own Academic Council has separately approved a formula for turning a CPI or CGPA figure into an equivalent percentage - (CPI/CGPA minus 0.5), multiplied by 10 - which is used for classification purposes (Second Class from 5.5, First Class from 6.5, First Class with Distinction from 7.1) even though the underlying course-level grading itself is based on fixed percentage bands rather than that formula.
Worked example: a full semester on the GTU scale
Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the GTU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.
| Course | Credit hrs | Marks /100 | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core course I | 3 | 93 | AA | 10.00 | 3 × 10.00 = 30.00 |
| Core course II | 4 | 80 | AB | 9.00 | 4 × 9.00 = 36.00 |
| Core course III | 3 | 70 | BB | 8.00 | 3 × 8.00 = 24.00 |
| Elective | 3 | 50 | CC | 6.00 | 3 × 6.00 = 18.00 |
| Lab / practical | 2 | 42 | CD | 5.00 | 2 × 5.00 = 10.00 |
| Total | 15 | 118.00 |
Step by step
- Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the GTU grading table. 93 out of 100 is 93%, which falls in the AA band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
- Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 6.00 = 18.00, 2 × 5.00 = 10.00.
- Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 118.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
- Divide to get the semester GPA. 118.00 ÷ 15 = 7.86, the semester GPA for this term at GTU.
- Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 118.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 7.97.
The division actually gives 7.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 7.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.
Which GTU programmes use this scale?
The same grading plan applies across GTU’s degree programmes, including B.E. all engineering branches, Diploma Engineering, MBA, MCA and B.Pharm. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.
