Georgia Institute of Technology CGPA Calculator

Atlanta, Georgia · public · est. 1885

CGPA at Georgia Institute of Technology is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. Georgia Tech awards those grade points through the official Georgia Tech grading scale shown below, a 5-band table that runs from 4.00 (A, 90% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded from 60%.

Georgia Institute of Technology grading scale

Georgia Tech grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 5 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns A (4.00), and 60% is the lowest passing band (D). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

Confirms Georgia Tech uses only five whole-letter grades for GPA purposes: A=4.0 ('Excellent'), B=3.0 ('Good'), C=2.0 ('Satisfactory'), D=1.0 ('Passing'), F=0.0 ('Failure'), genuinely no plus/minus modifiers of any kind. Non-traditional marks (S, U, V, I, W, NR) carry no quality points and are excluded from GPA.

How grading works at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech's GPA math is the standard credit-weighted formula, but its letter grades themselves are the simplest of any major US university on this site: Georgia Tech's registrar confirms there is no plus or minus modifier anywhere on the scale at all. Every course is graded a whole A, B, C, D, or F, worth exactly 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, or 0.0 respectively, no A-, no B+, nothing in between.

Founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, Georgia Tech has grown into one of the most selective public research universities in engineering, computing, and the sciences, known informally for grading that is demanding in practice even though the scale itself is unusually plain on paper. Because there is no plus/minus cushioning at Georgia Tech, a course graded 'high B' and one graded 'low B' both land at exactly 3.0 grade points, a real structural difference from peer schools like Georgia's own flagship, the University of Georgia, which does use a full plus/minus scale.

Several non-traditional marks appear on a Georgia Tech transcript without touching the GPA at all: S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) for pass/fail coursework, V (Audit), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrew), and NR (Not Reported) all carry zero quality points and are excluded from the calculation entirely, the same treatment most research universities give administrative and pass/fail marks. Georgia Tech does not publish one official percentage-to-letter-grade table applied to every course, so the percentage bands here use the common convention layered on top of Georgia Tech's own confirmed, registrar-sourced whole-letter grade points.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Georgia Tech grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.00 = 12.00, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.00 = 6.00, 2 × 2.00 = 4.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 43.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 43.00 ÷ 15 = 2.86, the semester GPA for this term at Georgia Tech.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 43.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.12.

The division actually gives 2.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 2.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Georgia Tech programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Georgia Tech’s degree programmes, including College of Computing, College of Engineering, Scheller College of Business and Aerospace Engineering. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Georgia Tech CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does Georgia Tech use plus or minus grades?

No, Georgia Tech's registrar confirms the university grades on whole letters only: A, B, C, D, F, with no A-, B+, C-, or any other modifier anywhere on the scale. This is a genuinely simpler, five-grade system compared to the twelve-or-thirteen-grade plus/minus scales most peer research universities use.

What is Georgia Tech's grade-point scale?

Per the Georgia Tech Registrar's Office: A=4.0 (Excellent), B=3.0 (Good), C=2.0 (Satisfactory), D=1.0 (Passing), F=0.0 (Failure). These are the only five grades that carry quality points toward GPA.

Which Georgia Tech marks don't affect GPA?

Georgia Tech's registrar lists S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), V (Audit), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrew), and NR (Not Reported) as non-traditional grades that carry no quality points and are excluded from GPA computation entirely, they can still affect degree progress and credit, just not the numeric average.

Is Georgia Tech's whole-letter scale different from other Georgia public universities?

Yes. Georgia Tech's own registrar confirms no plus/minus grading at all, while the University of Georgia (a separate institution in the same state university system) does use a full plus/minus scale. Don't assume the two schools' transcripts are directly comparable letter-for-letter.

Does Georgia Tech publish an official percentage cutoff for each grade?

Not institute-wide. Georgia Tech's registrar documents the five whole-letter grades and their exact grade-point values, but the specific percentage or rubric an instructor uses in their own course to award a given letter is set at the course level. This calculator's percentage bands are a standard approximation layered on top of Georgia Tech's confirmed grade-point table.
