CGPA at Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. AKTU awards those grade points through the official AKTU grading scale shown below, a 8-band table that runs from 10.00 (A+, 90% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 10.00. The lowest passing grade is E, awarded from 40%.

Abdul Kalam Technical University (APJAKTU) Lucknow adopts absolute grading system wherein the marks are converted to grades... The grading system is with the following letter grades and grade points scale.' The table awards A+/A/B+/B/C/D/E/F grade points 10/9/8/7/6/5/4/0 for percentage bands 90-100 / 80-89 / 70-79 / 60-69 / 50-59 / 45-49 / 40-44 / 0-39 respectively. Clause 14.3 notes the University reserves a right to 'scale/moderate' marks 'whenever required... on the basis of the result statistics', an exception-handling provision rather than the university's everyday grading method, which remains this fixed absolute table. How grading works at AKTU

AKTU works out SGPA for a semester by multiplying each course's grade point by its credits, adding those figures together, and dividing by the total credits taken that semester; CGPA repeats the same sum across every semester completed. The grade point itself comes straight from AKTU's own eight-band absolute table - A+ down to F - which the university's B.Tech ordinance describes explicitly as an 'absolute grading system wherein the marks are converted to grades', in contrast to universities that curve results against the class.

Founded in 2000 as Uttar Pradesh Technical University and renamed in 2015 in honour of the former President and aerospace scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, AKTU is headquartered in Lucknow and is one of the largest affiliating technical universities in India, overseeing engineering, management, pharmacy and architecture education at several hundred colleges spread across Uttar Pradesh. Because the university sets one common CBCS ordinance rather than letting each affiliated college define its own scale, a percentage score converts to the identical grade point at any AKTU-affiliated institute.

A course is passed once a student clears at least a 'C' grade (50% and above under AKTU's table); scores from 40% up to 49% earn a passing-but-marginal D or E grade with reduced points, while anything below 40% is an outright F carrying zero grade points, at which point the course has to be cleared again before it counts toward the degree.

Worked example: a full semester on the AKTU scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the AKTU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the AKTU grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the A+ band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 6.00 = 18.00, 2 × 5.00 = 10.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 118.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 118.00 ÷ 15 = 7.86, the semester GPA for this term at AKTU.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 118.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 7.97.

The division actually gives 7.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 7.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which AKTU programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across AKTU’s degree programmes, including B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, MBA, MCA, B.Pharm and B.Arch. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

AKTU CGPA: frequently asked questions

What is AKTU's percentage-to-grade-point table?

Under AKTU's B.Tech ordinance: A+ (90-100%) = 10, A (80-89%) = 9, B+ (70-79%) = 8, B (60-69%) = 7, C (50-59%) = 6, D (45-49%) = 5, E (40-44%) = 4, and F (below 40%) = 0. This is described in the ordinance as an 'absolute grading system'.

How is CGPA calculated at AKTU?

CGPA is the ratio of the sum of (credits x grade point) across every course in every completed semester, to the total credits of those same courses - the same weighted-average formula used for a single semester's SGPA, just extended to the whole academic record.

What is the minimum SGPA AKTU requires to pass a semester?

AKTU's ordinance requires a student to secure at least an 'E' grade or above in every subject of a semester and a minimum SGPA of 5.0 for the semester result to be declared as a pass.

Can AKTU adjust or moderate a student's marks before converting them to a grade?

Yes - clause 14.3 of AKTU's ordinance reserves the right to 'scale/moderate' theory, practical or sessional marks whenever required, on the recommendation of an examination committee, based on overall result statistics. This is presented as an occasional exception process, not AKTU's routine grading method, which otherwise applies the fixed absolute table directly.

How is an AKTU CGPA converted to a percentage?

AKTU issues SGPA and CGPA on its grade cards rather than printing a headline percentage. Students commonly use CGPA x 10 as an approximate percentage-equivalent for external applications, though this is a widely used convention rather than a formula stated on AKTU's own transcript.
