Bharathidasan University CGPA Calculator

Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu · public · est. 1982

At Bharathidasan University, your CGPA is the credit-hour weighted average of every course you have taken: multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add those quality points across all your semesters, then divide by the total credit hours. Grade points come from the official BDU grading scale shown below, on which 90% or more earns O (10.00 points) and the maximum CGPA is 10.00. The lowest passing grade is C, awarded from 40%.

Bharathidasan University grading scale

BDU grades on an absolute scale out of 10.00 with 7 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns O (10.00), and 40% is the lowest passing band (C). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

How grading works at BDU

Bharathidasan University calculates GPA for a semester by multiplying each course's grade point by its credits, summing across all courses passed, and dividing by the credits earned - with CGPA simply extending that same weighted average across every semester from the first onwards. The university's own 2016-17 CBCS grading circular sets out a clean, seven-band O-to-RA scale that applies uniformly to undergraduate arts, science and commerce programmes, without the relative or class-size-dependent moderation some other Indian universities build into their rules.

Established in 1982 and named after the celebrated Tamil poet and social reformer Bharathidasan, the university is based in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) in Tamil Nadu and affiliates a wide network of arts and science colleges across the region, alongside its own university departments. Its grading circular splits results into separate parts - core language courses, elective language courses, and core/allied/elective subjects - with the CGPA used for a student's overall classification calculated specifically from the core-subject part (Part III) once minimum passing requirements are met elsewhere.

An 'R.A.' (Re-Appearance) result, Bharathidasan's term for a failing grade, is awarded for anything below 40% and carries zero grade points; the university requires students to clear the paper again in a subsequent examination before it can count toward the degree.

Worked example: a full semester on the BDU scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the BDU grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the BDU grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the O band and is worth 10.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 10.00 = 30.00, 4 × 9.00 = 36.00, 3 × 8.00 = 24.00, 3 × 7.00 = 21.00, 2 × 6.00 = 12.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 123.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 123.00 ÷ 15 = 8.20, the semester GPA for this term at BDU.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 8.00, those carry 360.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (360.00 + 123.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 8.05.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which BDU programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across BDU’s degree programmes, including BSc Computer Science, BCom, MA Tamil, MBA and MCA. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

BDU CGPA: frequently asked questions

What is Bharathidasan University's UG grading table?

Per the university's 2016-17 CBCS circular: O (90% and above) = 10 grade points, A+ (80-89%) = 9, A (70-79%) = 8, B+ (60-69%) = 7, B (50-59%) = 6, C (40-49%) = 5, and R.A./Re-Appearance (below 40%) = 0.

What does 'R.A.' mean on a Bharathidasan University grade sheet?

R.A. stands for Re-Appearance - Bharathidasan University's term for a failing result (below 40% in a course). It carries zero grade points, and the student must appear for that paper again in a later examination to earn credit.

How is a student's final classification (Outstanding, Excellent, etc.) decided at Bharathidasan University?

For the Bachelor's degree classification, the university uses the CGPA and marks earned specifically in 'Part III' (the core, allied and elective subject courses), provided the student has also cleared the minimum passing requirements in the separate language-course parts of the curriculum.

How is CGPA calculated at Bharathidasan University?

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points earned across all completed semesters - the sum of (credits x grade point) divided by total credits - calculated separately for each of the university's defined course parts (language courses, elective language courses, and core/allied/elective courses).

What programmes does Bharathidasan University offer?

Bharathidasan University, based in Tiruchirappalli, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across arts, science, commerce and management, both through its own university departments and a wide network of affiliated colleges across the surrounding Tamil Nadu region.
