The GRADE POINT MATRIX is transcribed verbatim into gradingPlan: A+ 85-100% 4.00 (Exceptional), A 80-84% 3.75 (Excellent), B+ 75-79% 3.50 (Very Good), B 70-74% 3.00 (Good), C+ 65-69% 2.50 (Fair), C 60-64% 2.00 (Satisfactory), D+ 55-59% 1.50 (Average), D 50-54% 1.00 (Mediocre) and F below 50% 0.00 (Fail). This is materially different from the HEC pattern: USP uses nine letters on quarter and half-point steps (3.75, 3.50, 2.50, 1.50) rather than the 3.67 / 3.33 / 2.67 thirds, and its C grade sits at 60-64% instead of 61-63%. Clause 17(a) sets the minimum pass mark at 50% in every course; clause 18 rounds fractional marks to the nearest whole mark, so 59.1 to 59.4 stays 59 while 59.5 to 59.9 rises to 60 and can lift you a whole band; clause 14(b) requires CGPA 2.00 for a Bachelor's DMC/degree and 2.50 for a Master's; clause 12(b) excludes non-credit courses from the CGPA; clause 19 defines the scholastic statuses GS (good standing, CGPA at or above 2.00), NC (non-credit) and WD (withdrawal); clause 29 awards the gold medal only at 85% or above (4.0 CGPA) with no failed or repeated course and no discontinuity.

How grading works at USP

At the University of Southern Punjab your CGPA is the credit-hour weighted average of the grade points from every course you have taken: each course's credit hours are multiplied by its grade point, the products are summed and divided by the total credit hours. USP's grade point matrix runs on nine letters and quarter-point steps rather than the usual thirds, so 85% and above is an A+ worth 4.00, 80-84% an A worth 3.75, 75-79% a B+ worth 3.50, then B 3.00, C+ 2.50, C 2.00, D+ 1.50 and D 1.00, with anything under 50% a fail. Non-credit courses show on the transcript but never touch the CGPA.

Two details make a real difference in Multan. First, the regulations round fractional marks to the nearest whole number, so 59.5 becomes 60 and jumps you from D+ to C, while 59.4 stays put. Second, the pass mark is 50% in every single course, no matter how well the rest of your semester went. Bachelor's students need a final CGPA of 2.00 for the degree and DMC, Master's students 2.50. The same matrix governs BS Software Engineering, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, B.Com (Hons) and the university's Bosan Road engineering and pharmacy programmes.

Worked example: a full semester on the USP scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the USP grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the USP grading table. 93 out of 100 is 93%, which falls in the A+ band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.75 = 15.00, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.50 = 7.50, 2 × 1.50 = 3.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 46.50 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 46.50 ÷ 15 = 3.10, the semester GPA for this term at USP.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 46.50) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.18.

Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which USP programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across USP’s degree programmes, including BS Software Engineering, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), B.Com (Hons), BS Human Nutrition & Dietetics and BFA Fine Arts. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

USP CGPA: frequently asked questions

What grade is 84% at the University of Southern Punjab?

84% is an A at USP, worth 3.75 grade points, because the A+ band starts at 85%. This surprises students who expect 85% to be a plain A as it is under the HEC pattern. USP uses nine letters from A+ down to F, and its intermediate grade points are 3.75, 3.50, 2.50 and 1.50 rather than 3.67, 3.33, 2.67 and 1.33.

How are fractional marks rounded at USP?

Clause 18 of the regulations says marks must be recorded as whole numbers and fractions are rounded conventionally: 59.1 to 59.4 stays 59, while 59.5 to 59.9 rises to 60. Because USP's bands are five marks wide, a single rounding step at the boundary can move you a whole letter and half a grade point, so borderline marks are worth checking.

What is the minimum CGPA to graduate from USP?

A Bachelor's student needs a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00 for the award of the detailed marks certificate and degree, and a Master's student needs 2.50. Separately, every individual course must be passed at 50% or above; a course below that is a fail regardless of how strong your cumulative average looks.

Do non-credit courses affect my USP CGPA?

No. Students may register for additional non-credit courses, and on successful completion these are mentioned on the transcript marked NC, but the regulations explicitly state that they are not used in computing the CGPA. Withdrawals appear as WD and are likewise left out of the calculation.

How do I qualify for a USP gold medal?

The Controller of Examinations issues a gold medal to the student standing first in a discipline for a session, provided they obtained 85% or above, that is a 4.0 CGPA, never failed or repeated any course during the whole programme, completed the coursework in the minimum number of semesters and had no discontinuity in study. Ties are broken on highest marks obtained.

Can I improve a weak grade at USP?

Yes, but it is a controlled process. A student who has a grade lower than the degree requires, or who simply wants to improve, must obtain approval from the Rector through the chairperson, dean or head of department, who also decides whether sessional and mid-term marks are retained. The improvement examination is then taken with the Controller of Examinations' permission on payment of the prescribed fee.
