Austin, Texas · public · est. 1883

CGPA at The University of Texas at Austin is total quality points divided by total credit hours, counted across every semester you have completed, a quality point being one credit hour multiplied by that course's grade point. UT Austin awards those grade points through the official UT Austin grading scale shown below, a 12-band table that runs from 4.00 (A, 93% and above) down to 0.00 for a fail, giving a maximum CGPA of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D-, awarded from 60%.

The University of Texas at Austin grading scale

UT Austin grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 12 bands. A mark of 93% or above earns A (4.00), and 60% is the lowest passing band (D-). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

A search-engine text extraction of this exact URL (direct automated fetch did not return the full table) gives: A=4, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2, C-=1.67, D+=1.33, D=1, D-=0.67, F=0, and states A is the highest grade awarded, UT Austin, unlike Berkeley or Purdue, does not use an A+ at all, so 4.0 is the highest single-course grade point available under any circumstance.

How grading works at UT Austin

UT Austin computes GPA the standard credit-weighted way, but its own catalog is explicit about a detail that trips up students used to other schools' scales: A is the highest grade UT Austin awards at all, there is no A+ on the books, so 4.0 is a hard ceiling for any single course rather than a mid-point on a scale that goes higher. From there, UT Austin uses the common plus/minus system in the usual roughly-a-third-of-a-point steps, down through D- at 0.67 and F at zero.

Established by the Texas Constitution and opened in 1883, UT Austin is the flagship of the University of Texas System and one of the largest single-campus research universities in the country. Its GPA computation policy distinguishes clearly between the semester grade point average (courses from one term) and the cumulative University GPA (every letter-graded UT Austin course a student has taken), the latter of which is the figure used for academic probation, dismissal thresholds, and graduation honors.

UT Austin does not publish one official percentage-to-letter-grade table applied to every course; as at most large public research universities, the specific rubric or percentage an instructor uses to award a given letter is set at the course level. The percentage bands on this page use the common convention paired with UT Austin's own confirmed, catalog-sourced grade-point values, so the letter grade and GPA math are the reliable part even where the underlying percentage a specific class uses might differ slightly.

Worked example: a full semester on the UT Austin scale

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the UT Austin grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the UT Austin grading table. 97 out of 100 is 97%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.33 = 13.32, 3 × 2.67 = 8.01, 3 × 2.00 = 6.00, 2 × 1.33 = 2.66.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 41.99 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 41.99 ÷ 15 = 2.79, the semester GPA for this term at UT Austin.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 41.99) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.10.

The division actually gives 2.7993; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 2.79. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which UT Austin programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across UT Austin’s degree programmes, including McCombs School of Business, Cockrell School of Engineering, Computer Science and Moody College of Communication. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

UT Austin CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does UT Austin give extra GPA credit for an A+?

No, UT Austin's own catalog states A is the highest grade awarded, with no A+ in use at all. That means 4.0 is a hard ceiling per course; there's no way to score above it the way some other universities' A+ policies allow.

What is UT Austin's official grade-point scale?

Per UT Austin's course catalog: A=4.00, A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.00, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.00, C-=1.67, D+=1.33, D=1.00, D-=0.67, F=0.00. Grades below D- are not separately defined, F is the only failing grade and carries zero grade points.

What's the difference between UT Austin's semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

The semester (term) GPA reflects only the courses completed that specific term and can swing based on an unusually hard or easy course load. The cumulative University GPA averages every letter-graded UT Austin course taken to date, weighted by credit hours, and is the figure UT Austin uses for scholastic probation, dismissal decisions, and graduation honors.

Does UT Austin publish a percentage cutoff for each letter grade?

Not university-wide. Like most large public research universities, UT Austin's catalog defines the letter grades and their exact grade-point values, but leaves the specific percentage or rubric an instructor uses to assign a grade to each course's own syllabus. This calculator's percentage bands are a standard approximation layered on top of UT Austin's confirmed grade-point table.

How many credit hours does a typical UT Austin semester include?

Most UT Austin undergraduate degree plans are built around 15 credit hours per long semester as the pace needed to graduate in four years, though many students carry 12-18 hours depending on their major and course load. Because GPA is credit-weighted, a heavier course load in a strong semester can move the cumulative average more than a light one.
