Texas A&M University CGPA Calculator

College Station, Texas · public · est. 1876

Texas A&M works out CGPA by weighting every course grade by its credit hours. Multiply a course's grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, then divide the total quality points from all your semesters by the total credit hours those courses carry. The grade points come from the official Texas A&M grading scale shown below, a 5-band table topping out at 4.00 for A from 90%, so CGPA is reported out of 4.00. The lowest passing grade is D, awarded from 60%.

Texas A&M University grading scale

Texas A&M grades on an absolute scale out of 4.00 with 5 bands. A mark of 90% or above earns A (4.00), and 60% is the lowest passing band (D). The calculator above already applies these bands, so you can enter raw marks instead of letters.

  • https://student-rules.tamu.edu/rule10/ · retrieved 2026-09-02Texas A&M University's official Student Rules, 'Rule 10 - Grading', fetched directly. Rule 10.3 confirms the standard undergraduate grade points per semester hour: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=no grade points (hours still count in GPA computation). Genuinely distinctive and confirmed directly in this primary source: Texas A&M does NOT use plus/minus modifiers for undergraduate GPA at all, grades like A-, B+, etc. do not appear in the standard undergraduate grading system described in Rule 10.3; plus/minus grading is documented separately only for the School of Law (Rule 10.5.5.1), a different professional program with its own separate scale not represented on this page. The five passing undergraduate grades are A, B, C, D, and S (Satisfactory, no grade points).

How grading works at Texas A&M

Texas A&M's undergraduate GPA is built on one of the simplest scales covered on this site: Rule 10 of the university's own Student Rules confirms grade points of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0 per semester hour, with no plus or minus modifiers anywhere in the standard undergraduate system. A syllabus might informally note an 'A-' or 'B+' cutoff for feedback purposes, but only the whole letter is what actually reaches the registrar and feeds into GPA math, an A- and a straight A are computed identically as 4.0.

Founded in 1876 as Texas's first public institution of higher education, Texas A&M is now one of the largest universities in the United States by enrollment and the flagship of the Texas A&M University System. Its Student Rules distinguish this whole-letter undergraduate scale clearly from the university's professional programs, Texas A&M's School of Law, for instance, documents its own separate plus/minus grading system entirely outside Rule 10.3, so a law student's transcript is not directly comparable to an undergraduate's on this same scale.

GPA at Texas A&M is computed by dividing total grade points earned by total semester hours attempted, the standard credit-weighted formula used across US higher education, with F carrying zero points but still counting toward attempted hours (unlike a true withdrawal, which is excluded from the calculation entirely). Texas A&M does not publish one official percentage-to-letter-grade table applied to every course, so the percentage bands here follow the common convention layered on top of the university's own confirmed, Student-Rules-sourced grade-point values.

Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Texas A&M grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.

Step by step

  1. Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Texas A&M grading table. 95 out of 100 is 95%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
  2. Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.00 = 12.00, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.00 = 6.00, 2 × 2.00 = 4.00.
  3. Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 43.00 quality points across 15 credit hours.
  4. Divide to get the semester GPA. 43.00 ÷ 15 = 2.86, the semester GPA for this term at Texas A&M.
  5. Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 43.00) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.12.

The division actually gives 2.8667; result cards print two decimals, so it appears as 2.86. Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.

Which Texas A&M programmes use this scale?

The same grading plan applies across Texas A&M’s degree programmes, including Mays Business School, College of Engineering, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Bush School of Government and Public Service. Credit-hour loads differ by programme (a typical semester runs 15 to 18 credit hours), but the marks-to-grade-point mapping above does not change between them.

Texas A&M CGPA: frequently asked questions

Does Texas A&M use plus/minus grades like A- or B+?

Not for undergraduate GPA. Texas A&M's official Student Rules (Rule 10.3) define only whole-letter grades, A, B, C, D, F, for standard undergraduate coursework, each worth a flat 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 grade points. Plus/minus grading is documented separately only for the School of Law, a distinct professional program.

What is Texas A&M's official undergraduate grade-point scale?

Per Texas A&M Student Rule 10.3: A=4 grade points, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=no grade points per semester hour. This is one of the simplest scales among major US public universities, five grades total, with no intermediate steps.

Does an F count toward GPA hours at Texas A&M?

Yes. Texas A&M's Student Rules specify that F carries no grade points but its hours are still included when computing GPA, unlike a true official withdrawal, which is excluded from the calculation entirely. This means an F pulls the average down rather than simply not counting.

Is Texas A&M's law school graded on the same scale as undergraduate courses?

No. Texas A&M's Student Rules document a separate plus/minus grading system specifically for the School of Law (Rule 10.5.5.1), distinct from the whole-letter A/B/C/D/F scale used for standard undergraduate coursework described in Rule 10.3 and shown on this page.

Does Texas A&M publish an official percentage cutoff for each grade?

Not university-wide. Texas A&M's Student Rules document the letter grades and their exact grade-point values centrally, but the specific percentage or rubric an instructor uses in their own course to award a given letter is set at the course level, as at most large public universities. This calculator's percentage bands are a standard approximation on top of Texas A&M's confirmed grade-point table.
