- https://qau.edu.pk/rules-regulations-relating-to-bs-program-morning-evening/ · retrieved 2026-08-31Official scale is unusual: it skips a C- and D+ band entirely (C at 55-59% drops straight to D at 50-54%), and uses non-standard grade-point steps (3.80 for A-, 2.80 for B-, 2.50 for C+) rather than the common .33/.67 thirds. A student must attend at least 80% of classes held in a course to sit the terminal exam. Grade improvement/repeat is capped at 4 courses over the whole degree. Academic standing: CGPA < 1.0 triggers dismissal, CGPA 1.0-2.0 is probation.
How grading works at Quaid-i-Azam University
Every Pakistani semester transcript rests on the same arithmetic: a grade earns a point value, that value gets scaled against the course's credit hours, the scaled figures for a term are totalled and divided back by the credit-hour count, and the identical calculation carried across every semester produces the CGPA. Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad applies this system to its degree programmes, with 4.0 as the ceiling most HEC-aligned Pakistani universities use.
Established in 1967 as the University of Islamabad before being renamed Quaid-i-Azam University in 1976, QAU has built a reputation as one of Pakistan's leading research universities, particularly in economics, international relations, biotechnology and the natural sciences. Its postgraduate research output and international rankings sit well above most public universities of similar age, and admission to its more competitive departments is correspondingly selective.
No grading table published by QAU itself was located while researching this page, so its scale is shown against the standard HEC-aligned framework used by most Pakistani public universities, a 4.0 ceiling, a pass mark generally in the fifties, rather than a document unique to QAU. Given the university's research orientation, postgraduate programmes may apply thesis and coursework requirements on top of a straightforward CGPA, so students on an MPhil or PhD track should confirm the exact regulations with their own department rather than relying solely on this general scale.
Worked example: a full semester on the Quaid-i-Azam University scale
Here is a complete 15 credit-hour semester scored against the Quaid-i-Azam University grade points in the table above. The marks are illustrative, but every number after them is calculated the same way the calculator on this page calculates yours.
| Course | Credit hrs | Marks /100 | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core course I | 3 | 90 | A | 4.00 | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
| Core course II | 4 | 78 | A- | 3.80 | 4 × 3.80 = 15.20 |
| Core course III | 3 | 70 | B | 3.00 | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Elective | 3 | 66 | B- | 2.80 | 3 × 2.80 = 8.40 |
| Lab / practical | 2 | 57 | C | 2.00 | 2 × 2.00 = 4.00 |
| Total | 15 | 48.60 |
Step by step
- Convert each course mark to a grade point. Work out each course as a percentage of its total marks, then read the letter off the Quaid-i-Azam University grading table. 90 out of 100 is 90%, which falls in the A band and is worth 4.00 grade points.
- Multiply each grade point by the course credit hours. Credit hours decide how much each course counts, so multiply to get quality points: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00, 4 × 3.80 = 15.20, 3 × 3.00 = 9.00, 3 × 2.80 = 8.40, 2 × 2.00 = 4.00.
- Add the quality points and the credit hours. Adding the five courses gives 48.60 quality points across 15 credit hours.
- Divide to get the semester GPA. 48.60 ÷ 15 = 3.24, the semester GPA for this term at Quaid-i-Azam University.
- Fold the semester into your CGPA. If you had already completed 45 credit hours at a CGPA of 3.20, those carry 144.00 quality points. Add this semester and the CGPA becomes (144.00 + 48.60) ÷ (45 + 15) = 3.21.
Notice how the 4-credit course moves the average roughly twice as hard as the 2-credit lab. That credit-hour weighting is the whole reason a GPA is not just the average of your grade points.
